Last Night

I dreamed I was riding on an elephant.

Strange, to be sure – I have never ridden an elephant while I was awake.

It was a magnificent sensation, to find myself safely on its back as it rose to full height from my very low place, bearing me along with effortless grace. The world unfurled before us in organized wonder, clearly and conveniently arrayed from my perch.

I could feel the muscles of its enormous back and legs as they moved forward, creating a unified stability in their disparate and mighty individual motions. A wholeness of immense power with the ability to rip itself asunder, borne of a tender regard and love which prevents this from happening.

Awareness is sitting here.

Such a powerful experience, such a wonderful conveyance along my journey to deeper understanding.

I will sit and I will watch. All that I am seeking is hiding behind patience.

I find friendship in my presence.

I will do all in my ability to honor this friendship, to tend as dearly as even my most clumsy self is able – with love and compassion.

This elephant bore me along, apparently relieving me of the confines of some sort of mucky trap I had wandered into. Gratitude surrounds us as the wind blows through our hair, enveloping each step and every moment, step after deliberate step defining our progress – with every step another breath and fleeting awareness.

Free at last, I embrace each moment.

From the back of the elephant, I not only saw the entirety of the surrounding landscape and where I needed to go – I saw that we were already walking in this direction.

I remember now to look for the monkey and the rabbit. Surely, they are sitting here with me.

Together we watch the universe unfold, passing the pipe among us.

‘twas ever thus.
