I started writing haiku in August, after finding an individual who provides a weekly list of prompts for each day. There is a community of people who participate in the challenge, sharing their haiku with a hashtag of #DailyHaikuPrompt.
I think there is a bit of joy similar to solving a puzzle when you can write a haiku that works.
I also like to not use the word that is a prompt for the day, instead, I try to evoke that word through the haiku. No judgment against those who use the word itself, it’s just something I try to do for the sake of making it more challenging.
Here’s a bit of how it went…
August 11, 2023: grin
This crescent moon knows,
witness to jokes left untold.
Cosmic mirth aglow.
August 12, 2023: boisterous
Black billowing clouds,
bickering chaos, starlings
bursting through the sky.
August 13: web
These connections bind
dust and time, filling spaces
life has left behind.
August 14: buzz…
Bees and flowered fields,
common fare tonight. I’ll risk
some beer and a joint.
Some days the prompt is a little more inspiring than others. Or perhaps somedays I wander around the point more actively than others. I often know when something isn’t quite right, or not in a tone I want to spread around. Trying to add light here…
August 15: spiral
Downward and inward,
racing exponentially
we find our demise.
Cosmic knowledge etched
in stone, wisdom shows
our universe flows.
Cosmic knowledge etched
in stone, universe flowing
into the unknown.
These days of pleasure
whose numbers are few, racing
quick, like morning dew.
Again and again
we sink further, losing sight
of hope and reason.
The bolded one is what I shared on Mastodon. I don’t share all of them on Mastodon. I don’t always save the “extra” ones either.
This next one isn’t so depressing. Honest.
August 16, 2023: reflection
This tiny puddle,
empty. Yet see how it holds
the moon and its light.
August 17, 2023: undulate
Twisting and turning,
rising and falling, sustain
life’s flowing rhythm.
August 18, 2023: wrestle
Meditate your mind.
Seasons change position, wind
speaks of balance lost.
August 19, 2023: fire
Fierce destructive light.
Transformative, humbling, pure
ambitious hunger.
August 20, 2023: catfish
Hiding in the slow
river’s deep shadows, tasty
when fried in corn meal.
That’s enough for now… If you want a daily dose, follow me on Mastodon!
